"Mothering with the freedom to explore the expressions of instinct, intuition, and choice."
~Registered Nurse, International Board- Certified Lactation Consultant, DONA Certified Birth and Postpartum Doula, Certified Dancing For Birth™ Instructor
Greetings! My name is Kathy Farnsworth and have been a registered nurse for 19+ years, graduating from Deaconess College of Nursing, St. Louis, MO in 2000; specializing in pediatrics, neonatal ICU, mother/baby, and birth assistant RN with in-home and birth clinic midwives. I have 10 years of experience as an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant, however my lactation study began long ago while I was a pediatric nurse. Breastmilk feeding mothers suddenly found themselves in a “breast emergency” when their child was admitted to the pediatric unit, for a variety of health reasons that left them unable to eat for a certain amount of time until their health status improved. Mothers would ask me, “What do I do?” As a new graduate, I had little guidance to offer; however, since it's not in my character to say, “I don’t know". I began to take lactation support classes in order to serve with more knowledge. In 2001, I was introduced to the term “doula” from a segment presented by a national news morning show and was immediately interested. I studied what the word “doula” meant and its origins. In 2008, I took my first DONA birth doula training course. I began working with a home-practice midwife in 2010 as a birth assistant. What a privilege to be a part of birth! In 2011, I completed a DONA postpartum doula training course. I have been a DONA certified birth and postpartum doula now for 6+ years. Each mom and baby couplet has a story; and only time, attention, training and deep listening reveals the appropriate path to "wellness".
I have a 3+ year history of studying and performing Middle Eastern Belly dance, American-Style Belly dance, and Tribal-fusion Belly dance; as well as some Chicago Step. I first learned of Stephanie Larson and Dancing For Birth™ classes from a DONA newsletter magazine approximately 7 years ago. It was an interest of mine then to take the class to learn more about how specifically dance movement assists in optimal fetal positioning, and how they can be used as comfort measures and labor techniques. However, I see how the most perfect time to have become an instructor was ‘now’.
As owner of this private practice it is my mission and desire to provide lactation support, childbirth and infant feeding education that gives options, promotes opportunity, and invites awareness so families may feel more capable to make empowered decisions. I bring with me the wisdom that every pregnant, birthing, lactating, and postpartum woman has bestowed upon me in the course of my life and career. I also bring with me the art and science of my nursing profession. My philosophy… “Mothering with the freedom to explore the expressions of instinct, intuition, and choice”. The satisfaction that comes from walking with a family on a journey that ends in empowerment and self-efficacy cannot be underestimated! The goal is to empower my clients to meet their personal goals, NOT to impose upon them my ideas of the "right" way to do things.
My husband David and I are newly-weds! I am so loved and cared for - an amazing reciprocal love relationship! We enjoy spontaneous adventures, especially the ones that find us outside in nature or interacting with art and creative inspiration. We are learning what it means to “conflict well” and we are discovering those are opportunities that lead to further grace and intimacy with one another.
